PENTAGON BRIEFING ON REMOVING "The God Gene"

I assure you this is a fake. It's still fun, but it's fake.

Licensing Parents. I think it's a modest proposal.

Blogger Andrew Cohen makes a cogent and quite reasonable proposal for "licensing" want-to-be parents as a strategy to reduce the welfare state and the damage done to children by "bad" parents.  It's very libertarian in its premise and Orwellian in its inevitable conclusion.

Excerpt
"The state should require parents to be licensed. That is, there is no moral right to raise a child, and we would do well to think of it as a privilege that the state grants and can refrain from granting to certain individuals. If you don’t like that way of putting it, I am comfortable with a weaker claim: whatever moral right to raise a child there might be is defeated when the parent-to-be is significantly likely to cause the child substantial and avoidable harm, or, of course, if the parent does cause the child such harm. Those that should be refused a license to parent a child are those who are likely, in parenting, to harm the child. Those that should have a parenting license revoked are those who do harm the child. (In our society, the latter is called “termination of parental rights” because there is an assumption of such rights. Its worth pointing out that I have not seen a good defense of the claim that natural biological parents should be assumed to have the right to raise the child they create.)"

Evolution of Angels: From Disembodied Minds to Winged Guardians
'Tis the season for winged humanoids to alight everywhere from store windows to Christmas tree tops to lingerie runways. But it wasn't always so.
Angels, at least the Christian variety, haven't always been flying people in diaphanous gowns. And their various forms—from disembodied minds to feathered guardians—reflect twists and turns of thousands of years of religious thought, according to an upcoming book.
"There is lots of interesting theology about angels, and in some ways we've kind of lost the knack for that," said John Cavadini, chair of theology at the University of Notre Dame.

"Scientists at the University of Missouri have invented a way to apply fillings that is completely painless. It uses a new plasma brush that disinfects and cleans out cavities, killing bacterias and forming a better bond for the fillings. And it does it in less than 30 seconds! According to the scientists, "the chemical reactions involved with the plasma brush actually change the surface of the tooth, which allows for a strong and robust bonding with the filling material."

Terry Gilliam: 10 Lessons For Directors

Filmmaker Magazine has a fascinating interview with Terry Gilliam in which he relates 10 essential insights for directors.  I was impressed by these insights and believe they apply to a wide range of creative processes.  What do you think?
1. Growing up is for losers.
As a child, I always drew funny creatures, funny characters. But I think the trick is not to grow up, not to learn to be an adult. And if you can maintain the kind of imagination you all had when you were babies, you would all be wonderful filmmakers. But the world tries to make you grow up, to stop imagining, stop fantasizing, stop playing in your mind. And I’ve worked hard to not let the world educate me.
2. Film school is for fools.
Live and learn how to make films. I didn’t go to film school. I just watched movies in the cinemas. And probably my greater education was actually making films, so that’s all I would ever say: watch movies, get a camera, make a movie. And if you do it enough times, eventually you start learning how films are made.

Fourth-degree criminal mischief for sleeping on own couch

Yes, that's right.  Man charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief for sleeping on own couch.

"Tonawanda SWAT Team members descended on a Findlay Avenue home for a report of an armed gunman possibly holding his mother and girlfriend hostage.
But as police called for backup, and hostage negotiators repeatedly called for him to come outside, the reported gunman was sleeping soundly, he later told police.
"It was just a guy who had too much to drink," said Capt. Jonathan W. Scott. "We thought there was a hostage situation in there, and it turns out there wasn't."
But the tension quickly dissolved when the man walked out the front door, hands behind his head, and surrendered without incident to police at about 10:45 a.m.
He later said that -- as police tried to contact him by cellphone -- he was taking a nap.
"It turned out not to be a hostage situation," Scott said.
The man, who served in the Marine Corps, had rifles and swords in his room, though he did not use them in the incident. Police said the weapons did not appear to be connected to his military service.
Tonawanda police declined to name the man, and his age was unavailable, they said. He was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and taken to Erie County Medical Center for a mental examination.
No one was injured in the incident.
"He's a very nice young man," another neighbor said. "He's serving in Iraq. They're very nice people."

Over-drawn $4.85? You now owe $229.10

With the help of his mother, Daniel Ganziano set up a savings account at a nearby TCF Bank.  After he put money into the savings account from his job, Daniel Ganziano's balance eventually fell to $4.85 and with such a small amount, he ignored it.
The bank of course continued charging fees, the account became over-drawn as a result of those fees, and then came the "overdrawn" penalty fees, and before you can say "Shylock's Pound of Flesh", within 2 weeks Daniel owed $229.10 in overdraft penalties.  The bank refused to close the account until the fees were paid.  And to make it even more insidious, he can't get another bank account anywhere else until he pays off the first bank's extortion.

$154 million MQ-9 Predator B drone used to catch cow thieves

A North Dakota family has been caught stealing 6 cows via the use of a $154 million MQ-9 Predator B drone.  It was "on loan" to local cops from the US military.  The thieves: a North Dakota family named Brossart.  Apparently they were so dangerous that the local sheriff needed a Predator drone to take them down.  The Brossart's alleged crime? They wouldn't give back 3 cows and their calves that wandered onto their 3,000-acre farm this summer.

The Predator is the type used by the CIA to track down and assassinate terrorists and militants in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Now local police are using them to take down Americans in their own backyards.

Does this violate the Posse Comitatus Act (18 U.S.C. § 1385)?   That's the United States federal law that was passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction. Its intent (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) was to limit the powers of local governments and law enforcement agencies from using federal military personnel to enforce the laws of the land.

Here's the link to the story on the Predator Drone take-down of the cow thieves.

And here's a link to wikipedia re the Posse Comitatus Act.

Furiousier and furiousier

"The "Fast & Furious" scandal is getting messier and messier. New e-mails finally released late this past Friday reveal that the Department of Justice personal viewed the then-secret operation as a way to push for more gun control laws. Despite administration promises to the contrary, whistleblowers have endured "isolation, retaliation and transfer."
Meanwhile the operation's managers have done pretty well, some have even received promotions
Thursday Attorney General Eric Holder admitted that the operation was "wholly unacceptable," but he still offers absolutely no explanation to explain why the program was instituted."

Character is what you are in the dark.

A fascinating article that only reinforces that your Integrity is defined by what you do in private.

"Cooperative behaviour is generally associated with personal disadvantage. Scientists have therefore long been unable to explain why, despite this, altruism exists in nature. However, altruistic behaviour can be successful if organisms improve their reputation through unselfish behaviour and can benefit from it at a later stage: those who give receive; but those who refuse to lend support cannot expect help in an emergency. Solidarity is also the outcome of social evolution in humans. However, altruism can only enhance an individual’s reputation and prevail if the corresponding behaviour is known to others."

Documents: ATF used "Fast and Furious" to make the case for gun regulations

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, is investigating Fast and Furious, as well as the alleged use of the case to advance gun regulations. "There's plenty of evidence showing that this administration planned to use the tragedies of Fast and Furious as rationale to further their goals of a long gun reporting requirement."

What?  The DOJ giving guns to mexican cartels and thus creating a fiction of rampant unreported US guns flowing across the border?  All to promote tighter gun regulations in the US?  Why aren't people outraged about this?

Carpe Nocturna: night people are smarter!

Morningness-eveningness and intelligence: early to bed, early to rise will likely make you anything but wise!
Roberts RD, Kyllonen PC.
Source

Department of Psychology, University of Sydney, Australia.
Abstract

Research examining various psychological correlates of circadian type (also known as diurnal preference) has been, over the years, quite expansive. A notable omission within this research program would appear a systematic exploration of the relation between intelligence and morningness-eveningness. The present study redressed this imbalance. 420 participants performed two self-report inventories assessing circadian type, as well as measures of intelligence from two psychometric batteries: CAM-IV and the ASVAB. The results indicate that, contrary to conventional folk wisdom, evening-types are more likely to have higher intelligence scores. This result is discussed in relation to current theories concerning the nature of human cognitive abilities.

read e-mail on digitally enhanced contact lenses

"Researchers at the University of Washington and Finland's Aalto University have developed a prototype of a contact lens that would project digital images onto the retinas of its wearer. And, for the first time, they actually tested the lenses on live creatures - in this case, rabbits that underwent anesthesia. That may seem like it's out of left field, but researchers for years have been working on the idea that we should somehow overlay digital information on top of the real world. Lots of smartphone apps, including Wikitude, Spyglass and Golfscape – as well as some prototypes for "Terminator" glasses - are trying to do this."

Is that a USB key in your pocket or a dual-core computer?

Norwegian company FXI Technologies showed off an amazing USB stick-sized portable computer prototype on Friday, Nov. 18. Code-named Cotton Candy, the tiny PC enables what its inventor calls "any-screen computing": the ability to turn any TV, laptop, phone, tablet, or set-top box into a dumb terminal for its Android-powered operating system.  Packed in its tiny  body is a dual-core 1.2-GHz Samsung Exynos ARM CPU (the same processor as in the Galaxy S II), 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI-out and even a microSD card slot for memory.

FXI hasn't set pricing yet for the Cotton Candy, but expects it to cost considerably less than $200 per unit. That's not bad for a full-fledged computing device the size of a cigarette lighter.

Why I’m ignorant, and so are you.

People are ignorant.  I often am.  The problem is, most people wear their ignorance proudly, like a fine cloak held tight against the wind of reason.  They wrap themselves in opinions and beliefs without actually thinking about why.  In our culture of instant information, media sound bites, and Internet viral marketing, we have too much data flooding in.  Rather than truly explore a subject, people take short cuts in their thinking, and rely on emotion, “reliable sources”, and dogma to guide their conclusions.

People choose ignorance over thinking because it’s easier.

I have a Dexter Theory

Dexter question for those who watched last Sunday's episode. No spoilers here, just a theory posed as a question. Does Professor Geller really exist? Or might Travis have murdered him a few years back, and now Geller only exists in the mind of Travis, the way Dexter's father and brother appear to him? Consider, we've never seen Geller interact with ANYONE except Travis. And we know from last Sunday's episode that Travis is an exceptional artist (according to his sister). Is it possible Travis killed Geller years ago, and Geller now exists only as Travis' own Dark Passenger?

You shouldn't think of her as a woman. That would be a mistake.

This is the new teaser for Steven Soderbergh's HAYWIRE. It features an AMAZING cast! It's a straight-up action film from Soderbergh and looks simply incredible.

Threesome goes wrong: East Naples man accused of attacking wife and other woman

A sexual threesome turned violent Sunday, resulting in an East Naples man's arrest — accused of punching his wife, swinging a big-screen television at her and whipping her with a belt.

Jorge Daniel Silva, 22, of the 6400 block of College Park Circle, faces a felony battery charge after Collier deputies say he became enraged before a planned threesome with his wife and another woman Sunday afternoon.

Silva's wife told deputies that the three of them began kissing when Silva "freaked out" and started hitting her. The two women then ran into a bedroom and locked themselves inside, but Silva broke through the door, the report said.

As his wife curled up to avoid being hit, Silva punched her and "swung the TV at her like a bat," the report said. After hitting his wife with the television twice, Silva dropped it on her, then grabbed another television and threw it at her, deputies said. The second woman told deputies she tried to break up the fight but Silva would punch her in response.

Silva's wife was covered with blood when deputies arrived, her face was swollen and she appeared to have a broken nose, the report said.

Silva told deputies two stories -- that his wife attacked him after she kissed the other woman, and that he became jealous when the two women started kissing and wouldn't allow him to join. He also told deputies he broke down the door because he thought the two women were having sex without him.

All three appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, the report said. Silva remained in custody Monday afternoon.

New privacy fears as police could track your GPS without a warrant

The U.S. Supreme Court is considering whether police use of GPS devices to track criminal suspects requires a judge's advance approval.
The case being argued Tuesday could have implications for other high-tech surveillance techniques in the digital age.
The Obama administration is appealing a ruling that threw out the drug conspiracy conviction of Antoine Jones of Washington because FBI agents and local police installed a GPS device on Jones' car and collected travel information without a search warrant.

zombies

Zombie questions
1st: most zombie films presuppose a massive incident of zombie activity literally overnight and globally. This all but rules out any realistic pandemic / virus model except the following possibilities: global bio-terrorism of co-ordinated virus releases, or magic. Can you think of any other explanations for a global zombie plague occurring everywhere at the same time?
2nd: Infection vectors are greatly ignored in the zombie genre. If it is a virus passed through bites, and supposedly highly infectious, shouldn't ALL zombie bodily fluids be considered infectious? Would you want to grapple or hack on an infectious Ebola victim? What about mosquitos transmitting the virus? Or the virus being airborne from the zombie's "breathing", like a contagious flu? Zombies moan, ergo they breathe. How might realistic infection vectors affect your zombie response tactics?Top of Form

I'd like to postulate 4 types of zombie infection for the above questions.
1. Super virus such as 28 days later: highly infectious super-rabies.
2. Weaponized Cordyceps. (
http://youtu.be/XuKjBIBBAL8 ) A fungal spore infection responsible for wiping out entire insect colonies by infecting victims and turning them into violent zombies until the fungus "spores" and covers entire regions with microscopic spores that continue to infect individuals. Look up zombie ants to be afraid. Cordyceps: attack of the killer fungi - Planet Earth Attenborough BBC wildlife

3. A supernatural / paranormal type of event that creates true "walking dead".
4. As Bw says, a latent "gene" or inherent condition in people triggered by non-traditional causes (the movie Pontypool is a good example: it's a meme wherein people are becoming zombies as their brains overload with too much information and a "God Virus" meme is triggered to reduce the over-crowded population. pontypool trailer:
http://youtu.be/1PZkXgk4hZM

Assuming zombies "eat" the flesh and or brains of their victims, how do they process the meat? Do the zombies swell up like ticks and burst? Do they eliminate the waste as in zombie poop? Do they purge?
Another subject: how do zombies detect suitable prey, i.e. YOU? Do they "smell" you? Do they "detect" your electro neural activity? Do they hear or see you? I recently saw an interesting theory, that zombies detect prey by touch! They're drawn to the body heat of suitable victims: that's why they walk with hands outstretched and bump into each other and walk in groups: they don't eat each other because they're "room temperature" but go all zombie-postal when feeling the body heat of a living person. http://youtu.be/HCSxQXY406g
