Higgs explained by Bad Astronomy Phil Plait!
OK, the quick version. The Higgs particle is extremely important, because the Standard Model of particle physics – the basic idea of how all particles behave – predicts it exists and is what (indirectly) gives many other particles mass. In other words, the reason electrons, protons, and neutrons have mass is because of this Higgs beastie. Last year, the Guardian put up a nice article explaining this. A more technical discussion is on Discover Magazine’s Cosmic Variance blog from 2007. Sean Carroll has been live-blogging the announcement, and has lots of good info as well.
This particle is very hard to detect, because it doesn’t live long. Once it forms it decays in a burst of energy and other particles (think of them as shrapnel) extremely rapidly. The only way to make them is to smash other particles together at incredibly high energies, and look at the resulting collisions. If the Higgs exists, then it will decay and give off a characteristic bit of energy. The problem is, lots of things give off that much energy, so you have to see the Higgs signal on top of all that noise.

ACLU-NJ Launches Smartphone App That Lets Users Secretly Record Police Stops « CBS New York
The ACLU has released an app called “Police Tape” that lets users secretly record police stops.
The ACLU’s Alexander Shalom said the app is easy to use.
“There’s really only three buttons that the user needs to deal with,” Shalom said. “There’s a know your rights button that educates the citizen about their rights when encountering police on the street, in a car, in their home or when they’re going to be placed under arrest, and there’s a button to record audio and a button to record video.”

Scientists attempt 'hack' into brain of Stephen Hawking
Hawking, 70, has been working with scientists at Standford University who are
developing a the iBrain - a tool which picks up brain waves and communicates
them via a computer. The scientist, who has motor neurone disease and lost the power of speech
nearly 30 years ago, currently uses a computer to communicate but is losing
the ability as the condition worsens. But he has been working with Philip Low, a professor at Stanford and inventor
of the iBrain, a brain scanner that measures electrical activity. "We'd like to find a way to bypass his body, pretty much hack his brain,"
said Prof Low.

Naked man killed by Police near MacArthur Causeway was ‘eating’ face off victim

It was a scene as creepy as a Hannibal Lecter movie.
One man was shot to death by Miami police, and another man is fighting for his life after he was attacked, and his face allegedly half eaten, by a naked man on the MacArthur Causeway off ramp Saturday, police said.
The horror began about 2 p.m. when a series of gunshots were heard on the ramp, which is along NE 13th Street, just south of The Miami Herald building.
According to police sources, a road ranger saw a naked man chewing on another man’s face and shouted on his loud speaker for him to back away.Meanwhile, a woman also saw the incident and flagged down a police officer who was in the area.
The officer, who has not been identified, approached and, seeing what was happening, also ordered the naked man to back away. When he continued the assault, the officer shot him, police sources said. The attacker failed to stop after being shot, forcing the officer to continue firing. Witnesses said they heard at least a half dozen shots.

Arming Of Domestic Drones « CBS DC
WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – With the use of domestic drones increasing, concern has not just come up over privacy issues, but also over the potential use of lethal force by the unmanned aircraft.
Drones have been used overseas to target and kill high-level terror leaders and are also being used along the U.S.-Mexico border in the battle against illegal immigration. But now, these drones are starting to be used domestically at an increasing rate.

This is an amazing review of a Russian haute cuisine eatery.
A few of the gems include:

"Waiters are impeccably Italian in that they will argue with you."

Every Black Hole Contains a New Universe
A physicist presents a solution to present-day cosmic mysteries.
May 17, 2012By Nikodem Poplawski, Inside Science Minds Guest Columnist
Successful as it is, there are notable unsolved questions with the standard big bang theory, which suggests that the universe began as a seemingly impossible "singularity," an infinitely small point containing an infinitely high concentration of matter, expanding in size to what we observe today. The theory of inflation, a super-fast expansion of space proposed in recent decades, fills in many important details, such as why slight lumps in the concentration of matter in the early universe coalesced into large celestial bodies such as galaxies and clusters of galaxies.

Being 'Born-Again' Linked to More Brain Atrophy
WEDNESDAY, May 25 (HealthDay News) -- Older adults who say they've had a life-changing religious experience are more likely to have a greater decrease in size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain critical to learning and memory, new research finds.
According to the study, people who said they were a "born-again" Protestant or Catholic, or conversely, those who had no religious affiliation, had more hippocampal shrinkage (or "atrophy") compared to people who identified themselves as Protestants, but not born-again.
The study is published online in PLoS ONE.
As people age, a certain amount of brain atrophy is expected.
Shrinkage of the hippocampus is also associated with depression, dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Physicists from the University of Zurich have discovered a previously unknown particle composed of three quarks in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator. A new baryon could thus be detected for the first time at the LHC. The baryon known as Xi_b^* confirms fundamental assumptions of physics regarding the binding of quarks.
Prison Officials Want Masturbating Inmates Labeled As Sex Offenders
Talk about hardened criminals! Or doing hard time!
Connecticut prison officials are asking for a new law that would label inmates who commit lewd acts in their cells as sex offenders. Department officials say it's an ongoing problem at prisons such as the high security Northern Correctional Institution in Somers, where some inmates purposefully masturbate in front of staff, often female guards, counselors or other prison workers. "If they were on the outside and they did something like this, they would be arrested and held accountable as a sex offender," said Brian Garnett, a department spokesman. "And frankly, the same thing should hold true on the inside."

Spirals On Mars
Giant coils of lava on Mars suggest a mysterious network of valleys on the planet was born from volcanoes, researchers say. The origin of the Athabasca Valles region near the equator of Mars has been debated for more than a decade. Some researchers have proposed that lava once shaped the valleys, while others have thought ice was responsible. The way the ground there is patterned with multisided polygons suggests that either fire or ice could be the culprit — such patterns of cracks might have formed due to seasonal fluctuations in temperature if the surface there was rich in ice, but also might have arose as lava cooled and fractured.

Fossil find in Kentucky stumps experts
DAYTON, Ohio — Experts are trying to figure out what a fossil dubbed "Godzillus" used to be.
The 150-pound fossil recovered last year in northern Kentucky is more than 6 feet long and 3 feet wide. To the untrained eye, it looks like a bunch of rocks or a concrete blob. Experts are trying to determine whether it was an animal, mineral or a form of plant life from a time when the Cincinnati region was underwater. Scientists at a Geological Society of America meeting viewed it Tuesday at the Dayton Convention Center in Ohio. "We are looking for people who might have an idea of what it is," said Ben Dattilo, an assistant professor of geology at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.Scientists say the fossil is 450 million years old. University of Cincinnati geologist Carl Brett said it's the largest fossil ever extracted from that era in the Cincinnati region. "This is the ultimate cold case," said Ron Fine, the Dayton, Ohio, amateur paleontologist who spotted the fossil on a hillside last year and gave it its name.

Worker injured during sex gets compensation payout
A WOMAN who was injured while having sex in her hotel room during a work trip is entitled to compensation. In the Federal Court today Justice John Nicholas ruled that the woman was injured during her “course of employment”.
The woman’s barrister argued that sex was an “ordinary incident of life” in a hotel room, much like showering and sleeping.
The Judge ruled that “if the applicant had been injured while playing a game of cards in her motel room she would be entitled to compensation” and the fact that the woman was engaged in sexual activity rather than some other lawful recreational activity while in her hotel room does not lead to any different result.
The woman, who cannot be named, challenged the rejection of her workers' compensation claim for facial and psychological injuries suffered when a glass light fitting came away from the wall above the bed as she was having sex in November 2007.
The woman in her late thirties was required to travel to a country town by her employer, the Human Relations Section of the Commonwealth Government agency.
She arranged to meet a male friend there who lived in the town. They went to a restaurant for dinner and at about 10pm or 11pm went back to the woman’s motel room where they had sex that resulted in her injury.
The male friend said in his statement at the time that they were "going hard” and he did not know if they bumped the light or it just fell off.
“I think she was on her back when it happened but I was not paying attention because we are rolling around.”

Obama shoots down Mars exploration - Washington Times
To boldly NOT go where no man has gone before.
In its budget submitted to Congress Feb. 13, the Obama administration zeroed out funding for NASA’s future Mars exploration missions. The Mars Science Lab Curiosity is en route to the red planet, and the nearly completed small Maven orbiter, scheduled for launch in 2013, will be sent, but that’s it. No funding has been provided for the Mars probes planned as joint missions with the Europeans for 2016 and 2018, and nothing after that is funded, either. This poses a crisis for the American space program.

The high performance HST bullets are designed for law enforcement and ATK says they offer "optimum penetration for terminal performance." This refers to the the bullet's hollow-point tip that passes through barriers and expands for a bigger impact without the rest of the bullet getting warped out of shape: "this bullet holds its jacket in the toughest conditions.

"Hollie is a friend who I care deeply about, and I'm trying to show that actions do speak louder than words." She added: "Hollie is too proud to ask for help herself, so myself and her other great friends are being pushy and helping her out whether she likes it or not.
"Show Hollie that she's loved and appreciated in her time of need. Because no one should feel alone when they are ill."

Science Says Creativity And Dishonesty Go Hand In Hand
Turns out that people who are creative tend to cheat more. So how do you keep creativity from running amok?
Great scam artists are often described as “creative.” Jeffrey Skilling was a virtuoso of “creative accounting.” Bernie Madoff pulled off a “creative reinvention” of the old Ponzi scheme. And Charles Ponzi himself was a "creative promoter" and a "creative and ambitious businessman." Just last week, we met Mike Daisey, king of "creative license." Coincidence?
Perhaps not.
"The creative process isn’t just tied to dishonest behavior; it actually enables it."
A recent article in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology makes the claim that creativity walks hand in hand with loose ethics. Francesca Gino of Harvard University and Dan Ariely of Duke University conducted a series of experiments in which they asked subjects to complete various ethically ambiguous tasks. The result: Not only do naturally creative people cheat more than uncreative people, subjects cajoled into thinking outside of the box become cheaters, too. This suggests that the creative process isn’t just tied to dishonest behavior; it actually enables it--troubling news at a time when the corporate world treats innovation as an unimpeachable moral good.

Prank text about 'human remains' ends in police standoff
A Saskatoon woman’s random prank text message about a dead body led to armed police surrounding her family’s suburban home on the city’s east end.
The 25-year-old woman sent out text messages to a random phone number late Friday nigh that “made reference to human remains,” police said.
Of all the phone numbers she could have chosen to send the text to, the message ended up on the phone of an off-duty law enforcement officer from outside the city. The officer subsequently made a report to city police who traced the cellphone number to house on the city’s east side.
The prank backfired.

Kate Bush Cloudbusting
The song is about the very close relationship between psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter, told from the point of view of the mature Peter. It describes the boy's memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon where the two spent time "cloudbusting", a rain-making process which involved pointing at the sky a machine designed and built by Reich, called a cloudbuster. The lyric further describes Wilhelm Reich's abrupt arrest and imprisonment, the pain of loss the young Peter felt, and his helplessness at being unable to protect his father. The song was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 memoir, "A Book of Dreams", which Bush read and found deeply moving.

how much weight? how much weight?

don't leave me alone

I really want to like this film..... but I'm having a hard time getting into the "reality" of it. The nazi motorcycles sputter as if using traditional gasoline engines.... and heck, sound on the moon?

Fine Young Cannibals - I'm Not The Man I Used To Be
When I'm in trouble or out of step
If my balance has been upset
Oh, there's a feeling I can't accept
There's one thing that helps me to forget
Wonder what I'm thinking
Wonder why I'm drinking
But it's plain to see,
I'm not the man I used to be

My own Roswell Theory - C. T. Fluhr
I claim the somewhat dubious credit for this theory. Get your tin foil hat ready.
It's a variation on the classic Roswell UFO conspiracy
theory, but without aliens or UFOs.
The Roswell UFO Incident claims an object crashed in the
general vicinity of Roswell, New Mexico, in June or July 1947. Furthermore it claims a body was recovered
and stored at a local morgue.
My theory is based on the following foundations:
1. Roswell was an air force training and experimental air
base.
2. This was at the
beginning of the Cold War and the race for high altitude aircraft.
3. In 1994 the Air
Force announced it had been using "crash test" dummies as part of
"Project Mogul" to study the effects of high-altitudes on
pilots. The published report concluded
that Mogul Flight #4, launched from Alamogordo, New Mexico, on June 4, 1947,
was what crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, and formed the source of the debris
which sparked the Roswell UFO Incident.
Now consider these points:
- Camp Roswell POW Camp was located14 miles SE of Roswell, New Mexico and housed POWs from 1942-1947. In addition to the airfield, the Roswell POW camp was built for up to 4800 Prisoners of War. The POWs were actually used as construction laborers on local projects and many of Roswell's parks were built by POWs. The Spring River, which passes through downtown Roswell, was lined with concrete and stones using POW labor. Most of the POWs were German and Italian soldiers captured during the North African campaign but there were also Japanese POWs. The actual number of Japanese POW's is unrecorded due to the large number who refused to identify themselves until repatriated to Japan in 1947.
- The US government was at this time testing the effects of radiation on its own troops in numerous bomb tests. Testing on US soldiers also included incidents such as the infamous Tuskegee syphilis experiment.
Conclusion:
- There was no UFO or alien crash at Roswell.
- The US government did not use "crash test dummies" for the high altitude tests. They used undocumented Japanese POWs.
Consider the general descriptions of the "alien"
bodies: Small stature, hairless, bluish or pale skin, oval eyes. How would a Japanese POW appear after dying
of high-altitude exposure, especially if the subject's body had been shaved in
anticipation of the post mortem examination?
This is the kind of secret people keep. If revealed, all concerned would face War
Crimes trials similar to the 23 Nazi doctors and scientists were put on trial
for the unethical treatment of concentration camp inmates, often used as
research subjects with fatal consequences.
Such damage would also harm current US world standing particularly with
Japan and other Pacific Rim nations.
